KUCHING, 28 MAY 2019 - Did you know Doraemon was once a yellow robot cat and had ears? But one day, a mouse robot ate his ears and Doraemon cried so hard that the tears rubbed the yellow paint off. That’s how he turned into the iconic blue robot cat that we Malaysian know and love today.

To a generation of young Sarawakians, there are many things that might conjure up fond memories of childhood. Those remnants of past decade could take the form of just simply peeling open a White Rabbit candy wrapper. However, none of those come close to the national phenomenon that was – and still is – Doraemon.

The world’s most famous cat has made his way to Kuching city. To celebrate this double festive celebration, Animation International (M) Sdn Bhd has brought an immersive Doraemon event to Kuching city.

From now until 30th June 2019, Doraemon enthusiasts in Kuching will be able to immerse themselves visiting the 4000 square-foot pop-up store on the VivaCity Megamall concourse, that features various Doraemon figures. Each of the Doraemon figures are holding a gadget from the comic books such as the Head Copters and Memory Bread.

“Doraemon was created as a fun way for kids to learn how to read, meaning they will develop their cognitive skill while playing. The main theme of Doraemon is friendship. We hope to create the same magical feeling of genuine happiness, togetherness and bonding, creating strong family values through spending quality time together at this Doraemon event” said Mr Steve Chow, Director of Animation International (M) Sdn Bhd.

This will also be the first-of-its-kind for a Doraemon event with a cashless pop-up store. In collaboration with Sarawak Multimedia Authority, visitors will be able to make a purchase at the pop-up store with a secure, fast and convenient mobile e-wallet and digital payment transaction through Sarawak Pay App, and enjoy a 10% discount of all item without the hassle of cash, just use the scan & pay function to scan the QR code and pay away.

"We are pleased with this unique collaboration between Doraemon and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA). This partnership represent Sarawak’s journey towards digital transformation and the country’s readiness to move to a cashless society. Hence, this partnership is vital in helping us achieve our goals of connecting and digitizing the payment ecosystem in Sarawak”, said Dr Zaidi bin Razak, General Manager of Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).

Entrance to the event is free and it is open to the public from 10am to 10pm every day. Besides the 43 live-sized figurines on display, a variety of Doraemon-inspired merchandise is sold at the pop-up store and fun-filled activities are held throughout the month for both adults and kids.

SARAWAK PAY APP is available for users to download at Google Play Store and Apple Store.
